뱀이 사람을 물었을 때, 그 사람이 구리 뱀을 쳐다보면 살아났다. - 민수기 21장 9절

 

오늘의 제1독서는 조금 이상하게 느껴지지 않으셨나요?
왜 하느님께서는 구리뱀을 사용해 백성을 구하셨을까요?
고대 근동 지역의 여러 문화에서는 뱀을 신으로 섬기기도 했기 때문에, 이런 방식은 우상숭배처럼 보이기도 합니다.

하지만 하느님께서는 거짓 신을 섬기라고 하신 것이 아니었습니다.
이스라엘 백성이 하느님을 신뢰하지 못하고 불평했던 그 죄에 대해 회개하도록 이끄시려는 뜻이었습니다.

하느님께서는 구리뱀이라는 시각적인 상징을 통해, 그들이 하느님에게서 멀어질 때 어떤 일이 벌어지는지를 보여주셨습니다:
슬픔, 고통, 심지어 죽음.
구뱀을 바라보는 일은, 곧 자신들의 죄와 그 결과를 직면하는 일이었습니다.
또한, 이 우상처럼 생긴 동상을 통해, 하느님은 그들이 점점 이방인들처럼 행동하고 있다는 사실도 깨닫게 하셨습니다.
그야말로 강력한 영적 경종이었지요.

오늘 복음은 이 메시지를 더욱 분명히 전해줍니다.
예수님은 예루살렘의 종교 지도자들에게 경고하셨습니다:
너희는 자기 죄 속에서 죽을 것이다.  (요한복음 8장 24절)
이는 광야에서 뱀에 물려 죽어간 이스라엘 사람들을 떠올리게 합니다.

하지만 이어서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다:
너희는 사람의 아들을 들어 올린 뒤에야 내가 나임을 깨달을 것이다. (요한복음 8장 28절)

즉, 예수님께서는 십자가 위에 들어 올려지실 때, 우리에게 죄의 결과를 직접 보여주실 것이라고 말씀하신 것입니다.
십자가는 죄가 가져오는 고통, 약함, 외로움, 고난, 죽음을 낱낱이 드러냅니다.

하지만 이 십자가의 모습이 불편하게 느껴질지라도, 그 안에는 놀라운 진리가 숨겨져 있습니다.
하느님의 사랑이 그것입니다—우리를 구원하시기 위해 기꺼이 죽음을 택하신 사랑.
그 사랑은 완고한 우리의 마음을 뚫고 들어와, 하느님께 감사와 경외로 돌아서게 만듭니다.

우리는 오늘날 십자가가 보여주는 현실의 고통을 외면하고 싶어하는 세상에 살고 있습니다.
하지만 우리가 구원받을 수 있는 길은, 그 고통을 직면하고,
자신의 죄를 고백하며,
예수님께 겸손히 구원을 청하는 것입니다.

그러니 오늘 십자가를 바라보세요.
당신을 위해 그토록 겸손히 고통을 견디신 분을 눈을 들어 바라보세요.

 

주님, 당신의 십자가로 세상을 구원하셨기에, 우리가 당신을 흠숭합니다!

Daily Meditation: Numbers 21:4-9

Whenever anyone . . . looked at the bronze serpent, he lived. (Numbers 21:9)

Don’t you find today’s first reading a little strange? Why would God use a statue of a serpent to save his people? Especially when you consider that many ancient Near East cultures worshipped a serpent-like god, the whole idea seems idolatrous!

Of course, the Lord wasn’t telling his people to worship a false god. He wanted to bring them to repentance for their lack of trust in him. So he gave them a graphic image of what happens when they turn away from him: sadness, suffering, and death. Looking upon that bronze serpent brought them face-to-face with the very real consequences of their sin. And because it looked like a false idol, this statue confronted them with the way their faithlessness was making them act like the pagans around them. That was quite a wake-up call!

Today’s Gospel makes this point even clearer. Speaking to the religious leaders in Jerusalem, Jesus warned that anyone who persisted in sin would “die” in their sins—just as those Israelites had died in the desert (John 8:24). But then he said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM” (8:28). Like the story in our first reading, Jesus was offering his people—and all of us—a way to be set free from the consequences of sin. He was saying that when he was lifted up on the cross, we would see just what sin does. We would see all the pain, weakness, loneliness, suffering, and, ultimately, the death that sin produces.

But that vision of a crucified Christ, unsettling as it may be, would also reveal something wonderful. It would open our eyes to the love that God has for us—a love that goes so far as to die for us in order to save us. A love that pierces hardened hearts and turns them back to the Lord with gratitude and awe.

We live in a world that avoids the harsh realities displayed on the cross. But the only way we can be saved is to confront those realities, confess our sin, and humbly ask Jesus to rescue us. So gaze at the cross today. Fix your eyes on the One who suffered so humbly out of love for you.

“We adore you, O Lord, for by your cross you have redeemed the world!”
