 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 할 것이다. - 요한복음 8장 32절

 

오늘 복음에서 예수님이 말씀하신 자유를 누구보다 잘 이해한 사람이 있다면, 그것은 바로 홀리(Holly)였습니다.

그녀가 수감 생활을 시작하던 날, 마음속에는 수치심과 분노가 가득했습니다.
특히 자녀들을 빼앗겼다는 사실이 그녀를 더욱 괴롭게 했지요.
그녀는 말했습니다.

“하느님께서 정말 계신다고 해도, 나를 좋아하지는 않을 거라고 생각했어요.”

하지만 감옥은 그녀에게 인생의 전환점이 되었습니다.
그녀는 미사에 참석하기 시작했고, 날마다 기도하고 성경을 읽는 습관을 들였습니다.
시간이 흐르며 그녀는 자신의 삶을 주님께 온전히 드리게 되었고,
마침내 가톨릭 신자로 받아들여졌습니다.

지금은 출소하여, 중독에서 회복 중인 여성들을 위한 쉼터를 운영하고 있는 홀리.
그녀는 예수님의 진리를 발견했고, 그 진리가 그녀를 자유롭게 만든 것입니다!

홀리는 중요한 진리를 깨달았습니다:
우리를 가장 깊이 가두는 것은 죄입니다.
역설적으로, 자유를 잃은 장소의 상징인 감옥이야말로
그녀가 그리스도의 치유하시는 능력으로 진정한 자유를 찾은 장소가 되었습니다.

한때 하느님에게서 멀어져 있던 그녀는,
예수님이 참된 분이심을, 그분의 말씀이 진실임을 깨달았습니다.
그리고 그 진리와 은총에 의지함으로써,
죄가 그녀를 꽉 붙들고 있던 그 손아귀에서 벗어날 수 있었던 것이지요.

예수님께서는 우리 모두에게 약속하십니다:
“너희가 내 말 안에 머무르면 참으로 나의 제자가 된다. 그러면 너희가 진리를 깨닫게 될 것이다. 그리고 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 할 것이다.” (요한복음 8장 31절 ~ 32절)

우리 각자도 그 자유를 향한 여정 위에 있습니다.
그 여정이 홀리처럼 극적이지는 않을 수 있지만,
도착지는 같습니다:
바로 죄와 수치, 죄책감에서 우리를 해방시키시는 예수님.

우리가 예수님을 깊이 묵상하고 그분의 말씀에 귀 기울일 때,
죄의 힘은 점점 느슨해지고,
우리 마음에는 주님의 사랑이 불처럼 타오르기 시작합니다.

그리고 그 사랑은 우리를 행동으로 이끕니다:

• 가장 작은 이웃에게 관심을 갖게 만들고,
• 죄의 굴레에 갇힌 이들에게 복음을 전하고 싶게 만듭니다.

그때 우리는 깨닫게 됩니다—
진정한 행복은 내 마음대로 사는 것에서 오는 것이 아니라,
우리를 진정으로 자유롭게 하시는 구세주 예수님을 따를 때 오는 것임을.

 

예수님, 제 영혼에 생명을 주는 당신의 말씀에 감사드립니다. 죄의 속박에서 저를 해방시키는 당신의 사랑에 감사드립니다!

Daily Meditation: John 8:31-42

The truth will set you free. (John 8:32)

If there is anyone who can understand the freedom that Jesus is talking about in today’s Gospel, it’s Holly. When she arrived at prison to begin serving her sentence, she was filled with shame and bitterness, especially about having her children taken away. She doubted there was a God—“and if there was, I didn’t think he liked me very much,” she said.

But prison proved to be a turning point for her. She began attending Mass and developed the practice of praying and reading the Scriptures every day. Over time, she gave her life to the Lord and was received into the Catholic Church. Now out of prison, Holly manages a transitional home for women recovering from addiction. Holly had discovered the truth of Jesus, and that truth set her free!

Holly learned a key lesson: nothing imprisons us more than our sins. Ironically, the place that most symbolizes the loss of freedom—a prison—became the place where she found true freedom through the healing power of Christ. She had been alienated from God, but she discovered that Jesus—and his word—were true. And it was her belief and her reliance on the grace and truth of the Lord that finally loosened the grip that sin had on her.

Jesus promises all of us that when we “remain” in his word, the truth contained in that word will set us free (John 8:31, 32). We are all on a journey toward that freedom. Ours may not be as dramatic as Holly’s, but the destination is the same: Jesus, who liberates us from sin and our bondage to guilt and shame.

When we dwell on Jesus and ponder his words, we find the grip of sin loosening. We begin to feel a fire in our hearts because we are experiencing the power of his love. And that love leads us to action. It leads us to care for the least among us, and it leads us to share the good news of Christ with those trapped in sin. We discover the paradoxical secret to happiness: that freedom comes not from going our own way, but from following Jesus, the Savior who truly sets us free!
